What if

The comparison appears once both scenarios are saved.

Reference block: the method, a worked example and answers to common questions. It does not affect the calculation above.

How it is calculated

  1. The FIRE number is the capital whose passive income you can live on: FIRE = monthly expenses * 12 * 100 / SWR, where SWR is the safe withdrawal rate in percent per annum. At the classic 4% that is exactly 25 years of annual expenses.
  2. The 100 / SWR multiple is kept as an exact fraction: at a 3% rate it equals 33 and 1/3, and rounding it to a decimal would move the target by whole rubles. Today’s passive income is portfolio * SWR / 1200 a month.
  3. The time to target uses the same monthly projection as the emergency fund: return on the balance (the rate’s monthly share as an exact fraction), then the contribution — until the month the portfolio reaches the FIRE number.
  4. The withdrawal rate is clamped between 1 and 20%: below that the target runs away to infinity, above it the word “safe” loses meaning.

Worked example

The figures the page opens with: expenses of 60 000 ₽ a month, a 4% SWR. The FIRE number is 18 000 000 ₽ — 25 annual budgets. The current 1 000 000 ₽ portfolio already yields a passive 3 333.33 ₽ a month.

Adding 50 000 ₽ a month at an 8% annual return, the target is 166 months away — just under 14 years. Raise the return or the contribution in the form and watch the term shrink.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule and where does it come from?

From portfolio survival studies: withdrawing 4% of the initial capital a year, inflation-adjusted, a stock-and-bond portfolio survived a 30-year retirement with high probability. It is last-century statistics on the US market — a guideline, not a guarantee.

Why is the target 25 years of expenses?

It is the same 4% rule from the other side: 100 / 4 = 25. At a 3% SWR the multiple is 33 and 1/3, at 5% it is 20. The more conservative the withdrawal rate, the bigger the capital and the longer the road — and the calmer the retirement.

What portfolio return should I enter?

A realistic long-term one — ideally the real return, net of inflation, so both the expenses and the target stay in today’s rubles. “Inflation” sizes the price growth; “Deposit” and “Dividends and bonds” size the instruments.

Are inflation and taxes accounted for?

Not directly: every sum is in today’s rubles. The honest approach is to enter the real return (nominal minus inflation) and remember the income tax on investment gains; the IIS contribution deduction is computed by “Taxes and deductions”.

My passive income already covers part of my expenses — does that count?

Yes — the passive income card shows what the portfolio yields right now: 3 333.33 ₽ of the 60 000 ₽ monthly expenses in the example. Full financial independence arrives when that figure grows to the whole of the expenses.

Is FIRE realistic on an ordinary salary?

The savings rate and time decide: putting away half the income reaches the target in roughly 15-17 years at almost any salary — because both the target (expenses) and the contribution scale with income. Start with the 50/30/20 rule and see what contribution you can sustain.

Can I stop contributing before the target?

Yes — from the moment the portfolio is large enough for compounding alone to carry it to the target by the desired year. Checking is easy: zero the contribution in the form and see whether the goal still arrives in acceptable time. The earlier the main contributions are made, the sooner that point comes.
