What if

The comparison appears once both scenarios are saved.

Reference block: the method, a worked example and answers to common questions. It does not affect the calculation above.

How it is calculated

  1. This calculator solves the deposit problem in reverse: not “how much will it grow” but “how much to set aside”. What the starting sum will compound into is subtracted from the goal, and the gap is closed by equal end-of-month contributions.
  2. The contribution comes from the annuity formula: payment = (goal - start * (1+i)^n) / (((1+i)^n - 1) / i), where i is the monthly rate (annual / 1200 as an exact fraction) and n the term in months. At a zero rate it degenerates into a simple (goal - start) / n.
  3. The equation is solved in exact fractions and the found contribution is rounded to the kopeck once — so the month-by-month projection (interest on the balance, then the contribution) lands exactly on the goal, with no kopeck shortfall.
  4. If the starting sum alone compounds past the goal, the contribution is zero — the calculator says the goal is already reachable and shows the balance growing without top-ups.

Worked example

The figures the page opens with: a goal of 3 000 000 ₽ in 5 years, a 500 000 ₽ start, 12% per annum. The monthly contribution comes to 25 611.12 ₽ — and exactly 60 months later the balance reads 3 000 000 ₽.

Interest earns 963 332.85 ₽ of the total over five years — nearly a third of the goal is paid by compounding rather than by salary: your own money in that sum is only the 500 000 ₽ start and the contributions themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Why this exact contribution?

It is the solution of the accumulation equation: the start compounds, contributions arrive at each month’s end and compound too. The formula picks the one contribution at which the final month’s balance equals the goal.

What matters more: the term, the rate or the start?

On long horizons — the rate: interest on interest grows non-linearly. On short ones — the start and the contribution itself, because compounding lacks time. Try the term in the form: stretching 5 years to 7 cuts the contribution far more than a couple of extra rate points.

Contributions at the start or the end of the month — does it matter?

It does: a start-of-month contribution catches that month’s interest, an end-of-month one does not. The calculator uses the end-of-month convention — conservative and consistent with the deposit calculator. Over five years the difference is a fraction of a percent.

Where do I get such a rate?

The rate is your input: a deposit, a savings account, bonds. Size an instrument’s yield in the “Deposit” or “Dividends and bonds” calculator and plug it in here. For a safety cushion measured in months of expenses there is a dedicated calculator.

Is inflation taken into account?

No — the goal is set in today’s rubles. If you are saving for something that gets dearer, check its future price in the “Inflation” calculator and make that the goal: at 8% a year, today’s million costs 2 158 925 ₽ in 10 years.

What if I skip a month?

The projection assumes regularity; a skip moves the finish line or requires slightly larger contributions afterwards. Recompute with the actual balance as a new start and the months left — the calculator gives the new contribution instantly.

Should the contribution grow over time?

Indexing it at least to inflation is sensible: income usually grows, and a frozen contribution gets ever easier — and ever weaker. Recompute the plan yearly with the actual balance: a raised contribution visibly pulls the finish closer, or lets you raise the goal itself.
